Google’s $199 phone to compete with the iPhone -
The Google-powered cell phone is coming soon, and it will retail for $199,
according to the Wall Street Journal.
The price of the new Google (GOOG)
smart phone would put the device head-to-head with Apple’s $199 iPhone (AAPL).
The Google phone, which features a touchscreen and is made by Taiwanese
manufacturer HTC, faces some stiff competition. The iPhone 3G has generated
significant interest among consumers for redefining touch-screen technology,
popularizing mobile applications and significantly improving Web navigation on
cell phones.
T-Mobile (DT),
the first carrier that will run Google’s Android mobile software, will show off
the new phone to analysts and reporters on Tuesday in Manhattan. It is expected
to hit stores later this fall.
Representatives from Google, HTC and T-Mobile would not comment on the
Journal’s report.
Google unveiled features of the Android operating system on an unidentified
black HTC handset at a developers conference in London on Wednesday.
The HTC phone is just the first of many Google-powered phones, according to the
search giant. For Google to reach its ultimate goal - driving mobile Internet
use and, in turn, ads - it will need to get multiple devices in the hands of
mainstream consumers. The price will also need to be right, given that companies
like Palm and Samsung already offer entry-level smartphones for $100.

Microsoft's 'I'm a PC' campaign created with Macs -
Metadata found on Microsoft's creative copy used in its 'I'm a PC' ad reveals
that the graphics were actually produced using Macs running Adobe Creative Suite
3. After the details were published on the Flickr photo sharing site, Microsoft
scrambled to polish off the embarrassing details last night
Microsoft's
new ad
features contrasts a "stereotyped PC user" dressed up like John Hodgman in
Apple's Get a Mac ads with a number of people who say, "I'm a PC" apparently to
affirm that they run Windows.
However, not even Microsoft itself can wean itself off the Mac, as
the metadata discovered
by Flickr user
LuisDS
points out. Microsoft was not only using Macs but also Adobe's software in place
of its own Expressions Studio, which the company bills as software that "takes
your creative possibilities to a new level."

- Yahoo board
approves AOL talks –
Yahoo's shiny new
board has decided to move forward with talks with Time Warner about the future
of its AOL division, according to the Financial Times.
Citing an unnamed
source familiar with the company, the report says active negotiations are not
taking place yet--just that Yahoo could sit down to the table over the matter.
Time Warner CEO Jeff
Bewkes confirmed last month that the company will split up AOL's media and
Internet access groups. And there has been wide speculation that the company may
just ditch the ailing business unit altogether.
Earlier this year,
talks between Yahoo and Time Warner heated up as Yahoo looked for ways to thwart
Microsoft's unsolicited takeover bid. At that time, reports suggested that Yahoo
might buy AOL or that Time Warner might invest in Yahoo.
The decision came at
Yahoo's first board meeting since Carl Icahn and a few of his posse took seats
at the board table.

Pretec breaks records, with 100GB, 64GB, and ultra-fast 32GB CF cards -
Remember the days when
64GB
sounded huge for a CompactFlash card? Well, now you can pick up the world's
largest CF: a 100GB Pretec 233x operating at a zippy 35MB/sec. And if that's not
big enough for you, through some kind of crazy voodoo magic (aka Pretec Q-SATA)
four 64GB cards can be transformed into a 256GB SATA drive -- assuming you have
$1,596 burning a hole in your pocket. And if speed is your game, Pretec can
outfit you with a 333x 32GB CF card running at a record-breaking 50MB/sec for
merely
$630 -- chump change, right?

Windows Mobile 7 pushed back to second half of 2009 -
Good thing
nobody's working on anything right now in the smartphone space,
or this could be really bad news for Microsoft, whose current version of Windows
Mobile lost the technology and usability edge a while ago, and is being bandaged
up by the likes of HTC to keep the OS relevant to consumers. According to CNET,
some of Microsoft's partners in the space are claiming that the upcoming
Windows Mobile 7
has been pushed back to the second half of 2009, instead of the "early next
year" they'd
been expecting.
Microsoft has yet to make a formal announcement about the release date of the OS
or the specific feature set, so we can't exactly point our fingers and laugh,
but we'd say crying big, mobile OS tears into our morning cereal is certainly
appropriate.

Rise Of The PDF Exploits -
The Portable Document Format (PDF) is one of the file formats of choice
commonly used in today’s enterprises, since it’s widely deployed across
different operating systems. But on a down-side this format has also known
vulnerabilites which are
exploited in the wild.
Secure Computing’s Anti-Malware Research Labs spotted a new and yet unknown
exploit toolkit which exclusively targets Adobe’s PDF format. This toolkit is
dubbed the “PDF Xploit Pack” - here’s a login screen from one of its
installations:
This new toolkit targets only PDFs, no other exploits are used to leverage
vulnerabilities. Typical functions like caching the already infected users are
deployed by this toolkit on the sever-side. Whenever a malicious PDF exploit is
successfully delivered, the victim’s IP address is remembered for a certain
period of time. During this “ban time” the exploit is not delivered to that IP
again, which is another burden for incident handling.
Other existing toolkits have also been enhanced with PDF exploits lately. For
example we spotted the “El Fiesta” toolkit to have also added exploits for the
Portable Document Format.
Malware spreaders have put this kind of exploits to their arsenal of malicious
weapons for a longer time already. The “Tibs” group of malware, for example, is
known for planting malicious IFRAMEs onto infected legitimate web sites and
having them refer back to their exploit servers. Dissecting the shellcode shows
that the payload of the exploits tries to load more malware and the different
number per exploit appears to be a kind of affilation ID to keep some
statistics and track their different malware campaigns.

Dell Laptops Going 100% LED –
You know how compact fluorescent light bulbs have been
so prominent
in this early stage of this green technology revolution? Well, it turns out that
flat screen displays have been using fluorescents from the beginning. Obviously,
incandscents wouldn't work, so thin, cold-cathode fluorescent lights were used
as LCD back lights.
But here at EcoGeek we've moved so far beyond CFLs that they're starting to seem
like antiques. And we were glad today when we got an e-mail from dell saying
they felt the same way.
Dell is officially switching all of the back lights in their laptop screens from
fluorescents to LEDs. LEDs are more efficient, allow for higher contrast ratios
and they don't contain mercury like current fluorescents do.
The shift at Dell is certainly a signal that pretty much all flat screen
monitors will soon be LED lit. And hopefully that means home applications won't
be too far behind.
DELL DRIVING TRANSITION TO ENERGY-EFFICIENT LED DISPLAYS
· Announces 12-Month, 100 Percent
Mercury-Free Target for New Laptops
· Multi-Year Energy Savings Estimated at $20
million
ROUND ROCK, Texas and MONACO, Sept. 24, 2008 – Dell plans to transition all of
its new laptop displays to
light-emitting diode (LED)
in the next 12 months, a major achievement in its commitment to become the
‘greenest’ technology company on the planet.
“Our customers have made it clear that they want the greenest technology
possible,” Jeff Clarke, senior vice president, Dell Product Group said during
the company’s mobility summit in Monte Carlo today. “As an industry, we can
shape the future of green innovation and significantly reduce the carbon
footprint associated with mobile computing. Dell is committed to leading the
transition to energy-efficient LED technology.”

Motorola Introduces Two Advanced Noise Cancellation Universal Headsets -
Motorola’s press release revealed two new noise cancellation universal headsets
for everyones
mobile
entertainment needs. As one of the world’s market leader in Bluetooth enabled
accessories, Motorola introduced universal Bluetooth headsets that are the best
for background noise cancellation: the MOTOPURE H15 Universal Bluetooth Headset
and the Motorola H780 Universal Bluetooth Headset.
The MOTOPURE H15 Universal
Bluetooth
Headset features an exclusive flip design and has the best background noise
cancellation, based on independent testing of the top-selling dual-microphone
Bluetooth headsets. It is designed for busy, mobile consumers who are on the go
and in frequently changing noise environments. As surrounding background noise
increases, users won’t have to adjust the volume manually, because H15
automatically enhances frequencies to improve call clarity in both loud and
quiet environments.
On the other hand, the H780 lets users take the conversation while on the go –
from the office to the street or the crowded airport terminal. With exceptional
sound quality from CrystalTalk
technology
for headsets and seven hours of hands-free talk time, the H780 enables users to
carry on a conversation while on the go for as long as necessary. A tiny, 9mm
speaker comfortably fits over 90 percent of users tested. A brushed, carbon
fiber finish, spun metal, and textured side band create a sleek and slim look.
MOTOPURE H15 and the H780 are expected to be available beginning in Q4 2008.

on Launch Pad A and Endeavour on Launch Pad B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in
Florida. At the left of each shuttle are the open rotating service structures
with the payload changeout rooms revealed. The rotating service structures
provide protection for weather and access to the shuttle.
For the first time
since July 2001, two shuttles are on the launch pads at the same time. Endeavour
will stand by at pad B in the unlikely event that a rescue mission is necessary
during Atlantis' upcoming STS-125 mission to repair NASA's Hubble Space
Telescope. The missions is slated to launch Oct. 10.
After Endeavour is
cleared from its duty as a rescue spacecraft, it will be moved to Launch Pad 39A
for its STS-126 mission to the International Space Station. That flight is
targeted for launch Nov. 12.

Track your missing laptop with Adeona –
Platforms: MAC OS X, Windows and Linux
http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/index.html
Overview
Adeona is the first Open Source system for tracking the location of your lost or
stolen laptop that does not rely on a proprietary, central service. This means
that you can install Adeona on your laptop and go — there's no need to rely on a
single third party. What's more, Adeona addresses a critical privacy goal
different from existing commercial offerings. It is privacy-preserving.
This means that no one besides the owner (or an agent of the owner's choosing)
can use Adeona to track a laptop. Unlike other systems, users of Adeona can rest
assured that no one can abuse the system in order to track where they use their
laptop.
Adeona is designed to use the Open Source
OpenDHT
distributed storage service to store location updates sent by a small software
client installed on an owner's laptop. The client continually monitors the
current location of the laptop, gathering information (such as IP addresses and
local network topology) that can be used to identify its current location. The
client then uses strong cryptographic mechanisms to not only encrypt the
location data, but also ensure that the ciphertexts stored within OpenDHT are
anonymous and unlinkable. At the same time, it is easy for an owner
to retrieve location information.
How to use:
Using Adeona only requires
downloading
and
installing
a small software client. Adeona is free to use.
How it works:
Current location checks are run approximately once every 30 minutes. Each time
Adeona runs, it collects your machine's internal IP address from the operating
system, the external IP address from a third-party reporting service, the name
(if any) of the wireless network to which it is connected, the names of nearby
routers as reported by traceroute, and (if available) a photo via iSight camera.
It stores this information securely in an encrypted local cache. At some random
point in the future, it uploads the collected report to the distributed,
decentralized OpenDHT network.
