*SEE PRINTED NOTES…..

1 - Asustek to Make a Google Android Netbook - Google's Android OS continues to extend its tentacles deeper into Microsoft territory. Two weeks ago Archos announced plans to roll out an Android-based tablet phone later this year, and now netbook-pioneer Asustek says it may install Android on an upcoming, low-cost notebook.

According to a Bloomberg report, Samson Hu, who manages Asustek's successful Asus Eee PC business, says his company has engineers working on an Android-based portable, which may ship by the end of the year. The project isn't a done deal, however, and Asustek apparently is still deciding whether to move forward with the mini-note.

Let's hope that Asustek green-lights the thing. Certainly, the cost benefits of using Google's free, Linux-based operating system are very apparent to a vendor of low-cost netbooks. And Android plays well with low-power, inexpensive processors used in the Eee series. For consumers, a strong competitor to Microsoft is always a good thing. Besides, Android looks promising. It's intuitive and easy to navigate on the T-Mobile G1 smart phone, although it remains to be seen how well Android translates from phone to tablet and netbook.

The timing of Asustek's announcement is somewhat surprising. Earlier this month, the company said it plans to market fewer Eee models to cut production costs and to reduce customer confusion. (Few of us know the difference between the Eee PC S101 and PC 1000H, apparently.) While an Android-based model certainly won't ease consumer confusion, it will benefit users in the long run by helping Google's OS become a legitimate contender to Windows in the notebook PC market.

2 – Mobiles to have same charging socket by 2012 - Key mobile phone industry players have agreed to fit phones with the same power socket by 2012, industry group GSMA said on Tuesday.

It said handsets would have a micro USB interface, already used to transfer pictures from digital cameras to a computer.

The initial group of companies that have signed for the change include Nokia, LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Operators such as AT&T, Orange, Telefonica, T-Mobile and Vodafone are also part of the initiative.

The GSMA said that eventually it expected mobile phones to ship without a charging plug and cable because everybody would have one.

This should also lead to less waste and could yield energy savings because the agreement calls for chargers to meet efficiency targets, the group said.

3 - Microsoft announces Windows Mobile 6.5 - With an endless chain of leaks dating back several months, the suspense factor might not be there that Microsoft had been hoping for -- but for what it's worth, Windows Mobile 6.5 is now official. The latest rendition of Microsoft's mobile platform puts an emphasis on touch-friendliness with a honeycomb-style main menu that the company says is easier to finger than a traditional grid layout; a new lock screen that can be slid on different alerts to automatically call up texts, voicemails, and so on; a thoroughly-restyled cut of Internet Explorer Mobile that features a touchable zoom slider and frequently-used commands; redesigned menus that don't need a stylus to actuate; fingerable home and contacts screens, and more. It's not the thorough gutting of the platform many were hoping for, but for anyone thinking that Windows Mobile 6.1 can stand another facelift without ending up looking like Joan Rivers, 6.5's clearly your baby. Sadly, Microsoft's saying that no devices in the market today will receive official 6.5 updates, but don't pull out your wallets just yet, though -- the first devices with Windows Mobile 6.5 preinstalled should be available in the fourth quarter of the year.

4 - AT&T confirms Dell is getting into smartphone business - In January we reported that Dell was preparing to enter the smartphone business, and today it appears that rumor has been confirmed.

This morning at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega noted that "Dell announced they're entering the smart phone

market." Although Dell has not confirmed anything yet, the word of the CEO of one of the largest carriers in America seems to be pretty solid at this point.

Previous reports have said that a group of engineers at Dell have been working on a phone based on the Android operating system for over a year now, and on a phone based on Windows Mobile for over six months.

Dell will be focusing on the increasingly crowded smartphone market, currently led by Apple, RIM and Palm and their two devices will likely be a touchscreen phone and one with a slide out QWERTY keyboard

5 - WiMAX and LTE supporters prepare for battle - Supporters of rival technologies WiMAX and LTE (Long Term Evolution) will do their best to show momentum behind their respective technologies at Mobile World Congress.

The last week has seen a number of products announcements from the LTE camp, which will do its best to show that the development of the technology is moving forward at a rapid rate. Ericsson and Nokia Siemens, which last week unveiled a new base station, have announced new core network products ahead of the show.

The message from the vendors will be that they have equipment, especially radio base stations, ready for immediate trials and then deployment, according to Joao da Silva, senior research analyst at IDC.

Several of the operators that have voiced support for LTE will also be at the show in Barcelona, including Verizon Communications, China Mobile and T-Mobile.

Operators from Asia and the U.S. can be expected to be more up front with their plans, compared to their counterparts in Western Europe, who have to be more cautions because most of them still don't have the frequencies needed for rolling out LTE, according to da Silva.

Visitors at the show can also expect a plethora of demos in the exhibition halls for prototype LTE chips and devices, according to Mark Newman, chief research officer at Informa Telecoms and Media.

6 - LG demoing "world's first LTE-enabled mobile device" this week - LTE trials are starting to sprout up around the world -- and there'll be plenty more before the year's out -- so it's a relief to see that we're going to have some hardware to help us burn rubber once we get some live airwaves in our midst. LG will be demonstrating what it claims to be the "world's first LTE-enabled mobile device" this coming Wednesday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, a data card using LG's homegrown modem chipset -- and they'll be using it in three different devices: a laptop, a netbook, and a prototype MID. There'll also be a prototype LTE-enabled smartphone on display, and needless to say, the thought of tethering a 20Mbps handset to our PC is leaving us just a little breathless at the moment; hopefully we'll be able to recover in time to check out the demo in a couple days.

- Viewer Questions   (*Troubleshooting, New Tech, Etc.)

Q: How can I change a files default application on my mac?  (OS 10)

OK - Whenever I open a .torrent file, Opera automatically opens, and not Transmission. So how do I change a file's default application?  Easy 4 Steps!!!

1-First, find that file (in my case, a .torrent file) and right click (or control + click) it.

2-Select "Get Info" from the menu.

3-From this menu, click the triangle beside the "Open With" pane to reveal the default application switcher.

4-Select your app from the drop down menu (I want Transmission) and then click "Change All"

That’s It… Close the window!

-New Technology to keep an Eye On

(Auto Tech, Alt. Fuel, Environment, Hacking, High Tech, etc…)

1 -  Your Solar-Powered Cell Phone is Coming – A new cell phone, the Samsung Blue Earth, set to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in sunny Barcelona next week, will feature solar panels to charge its battery. “We transform the limitations of the mobile phone,” said Wonsik Lee, the vice president of the research and design planning team at Samsung in a statement.

The integrated solar panels on the back of the phone can yield a three minute call after a ten minute charge. The phone itself is made from recycled plastic water bottles and the front user interface can adjust screen brightness depending on whether the user is outside or inside.

The interface also has a useful nag feature that calculates something called “eco-walk” by telling you how much CO2 is saved if you walk instead of drive. The pedometer-based feature also tells you how many trees you are saving with this negative carbon footprint. And, setting it apart from other green phones we've seen, the Blue Earth is well-designed and looks like something even a non-eco-geek wouldn't mind showing off.

While specifics and pricing haven't been released yet, Samsung states its phone needs only 0.03 watts of electricity on standby, which is probably a greener feature than the solar panels, truth be told. The company is expected to announce soon when the phone will be sold and in which countries.

2 - Samsung's OmniaHD: world's first phone to capture 720p video? -   Samsung's newly announced OmniaHD will soon become the world's first cellphone to record 720p video. Unlike the HTC Touch HD -- which had precisely zero high-def amenities -- it seems the next breed of Omnia may actually live up to its moniker. Other purported specifications include an 8 megapixel camera and a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, though the resolution of the panel is currently unknown. Have we mentioned we can't wait to get our paws around this? Because we can't.

With the OmniaHD and boasting 720p video recording. (Wow) I can't wait to try this sucker out.

3 – AT&T Promises 4G by 2011 - AT&T announced Monday its next-generation 4G network will be commercially available in 2011. The carrier had previously said the new network would begin trials in 2010.

The 2011 timeframe would put the exclusive iPhone carrier a year behind rival Verizon Wireless, which has said its trials of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network would begin this year.

For AT&T, the shift in timing for introducing LTE differs from previous statements by the carrier suggesting it intended to use its 3G HSPA, or HSPA+, technology until 2012.

Introducing LTE, which is more than five times faster than HSPA+, may signal AT&T’s desire to offer wider services, including VoIP, mobile gaming and video calls.

http://cultofmac.com/att-4g-network-rollout-in-2011/8467

During all the excitement of the 2009 Mobile World Congress, AT&T has quietly acknowledged that it should have a fully ready Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in 2011. AT&T has pledged in the past to introduce the 4G Network in 2010 but, according to Senior Architecture VP Kris Rinne, will see the first phase limited to trials in 2010, with commercial services available the following year. This will put AT&T's 4G Network about a year behind Verizon's 4G network, which is for trials later this year with commercial services planned for 2010.

AT&T doesn't seem too worried about Verizon's time line, maintaining that it can rely on HSPA+ and have the advanced 3G networks reach 20Mbps sometime later this year through software upgrades. The LTE network theoretically is at least five times as fast in downloads, about 100Mbps and has a lower latency that should make multi-layer games, VoIP, and two way calling more practical than on 3G networks.

Speaking of time lines, it's probably safe to say that Apple's future plans for the iPhone could well be a factor here. On the other hand, it's entirely possible that AT&T has no idea what Apple's plans are.

4 - HTC Touch Pro2 is awesome in ways the Touch Pro never could be - So, how do you make HTC's Touch Pro -- already near the top of the WinMo heap -- an even beefier device? For starters, you can throw out that nasty VGA screen of yesteryear and up it with a 3.6-inch 800 x 400 replacement. Next, add a dedicated touch-sensitive zoom slider that works overtime to take maximum advantage of said screen, then throw in a few key carryovers: 512MB of ROM, 288MB of RAM, microSD expansion, and a 3.2 megapixel cam. Meet the Touch Pro2, the official follow-up to HTC's popular series of QWERTY sliders that introduces so-called "Straight Talk" technology for "seamlessly" transitioning conversations between email, single-line calls, and party calls. It'll also automatically switch to the crazy high-performance, full-duplex speakerphone simply by flipping the phone over, so it's clear that this bad boy was meant for business. It'll launch early in the second quarter in parts of Asia and Europe with other "major global markets" following in early Summer. Check out a shot of the Touch Pro2 in its fully (and delightfully) articulated position after the break.

-Tech Tip / Demo

www.trapcall.com - Always know who’s calling you.

Basically setup, and when a blocked call comes in hit ignore and after 2-4 second the phone rings back with the displayed blocked number and the caller has know idea.

Very cool and easy to setup – They have a free plan and then pay plans with more features like call recording, blacklist, transcriptions and more.

*No Software needed, basically works off forwarding via their server and they strip the privacy flag and forward back to you. Seems to work on mobile phones only!

Note: If your in to SIP Server or Asterisk you can also do this on that platform as well.   Search Google for detail on Asterisk displaying blocked caller ID
