Intel
cuts quad-core price by 50 percent
Intel posted price cuts on Sunday that included reductions of 50 percent on
select quad-core processors. The chipmaker also introduced new Celeron and Core
2 Duo processor models. The price of the Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz) fell 50
percent from $530 to $266, while the quad-core Xeon X3230 (2.66GHz) saw an
identical cut: from $530 to $266. Celeron price-cut highlights include the
Celeron 430 (1.8GHz), reduced 23 percent from $44 to $34 and the dual-core
Celeron E1200 (1.6GHz), falling 19 percent from $53 to $43. The dual-core Xeon
3085 (3GHz) was reduced 29 percent from $266 to $188, and the Intel Core 2 Duo
E6850 (3GHz), from $266 to $183, or 31 percent. Pentium dual-core chips saw
price drops too: The E2200 (2.2GHz) and E2180 (2GHz) were cut 12 percent and 14
percent to $74 and $64, respectively. The chipmaker introduced the dual-core
Celeron E1400 (2GHz) at a price of $53 and Celeron 570 (2.66GHz) at $134. New
Core 2 Duo chips were also introduced. The E8300 (6MB cache, 2.83GHz) and the
E7200 (3MB cache, 2.53GHz) at $163 and and $133, respectively.
Advanced Micro Devices officially announced on Wednesday an updated Phenom chip
line amid severe price pressure from Intel. Intel's price cuts brought its
quad-core Q6700 (2.66GHz) down from $530 to $266 and its Q6600 (2.4GHz) from
$266 to $224. The latter is now priced below AMD's top-line quad-core Phenom
9850 (2.5GHz), which is listed at $235. With this 16 percent price cut, the
Intel Q6600 is now undoubtedly the processor of preference for a budget
quad-core system,"

Dell unveils tiny bamboo-cased eco-computer concept
In honor of Earth Day on Tuesday - Dell spoke took the wraps off this funky
bamboo-encased eco-PC concept. Said to be Dell's smallest-ever computer, the
machine is 81 percent smaller than a standard desktop and uses 70 percent less
power. There's no word on what's inside yet, but Dell says the machine is due to
be released later this year, and should cost between $500 and $700. Hit the read
link for a couple more shots, and check out a render after the break.

Microsoft’s Mesh Revealed—Sync All Apps And All Files To All Devices (As Long As
They’re Windows)
Juggling spreadsheets, music, and reports between PCs may get a lot easier with
a new Microsoft service called Live Mesh.
Microsoft is finally launching a preview beta of
Live Mesh
Mesh lets you set up a virtual desktop online, and connect different computers
to it.
Microsoft's future plans for Live Mesh include extending the service to Macs and
cell phones.
Put any file into a Mesh folder and it automatically syncs between the online
desktop and every connected computer. Select a file or folder and you can easily
share its contents—photos, videos, music, documents—with any friend or family
member. You can also remotely control a connected computer from the Live Mesh
desktop. Right now, this works with any computer, as long as it is running
Windows XP or Vista. But the longer-term vision is to truly make this work with
any device. Mac and mobile versions are coming later this year. And eventually,
anything from Xboxes and DVRs to digital picture frames and printers could be
connected through Mesh.
Microsoft is offering a set of Mesh APIs that include storage services,
membership, sync, peer-to-peer communication, and a Newsfeed feature that tells
users the status of different folders and who’s accessed them.
In many ways this effort is a counterweight to what we are seeing with Adobe Air
or Google Gears, which are efforts to take browser-based apps offline. With
Mesh, Microsoft is in effect reasserting the primacy of client-based
applications. They need not be Windows-based.

4 - 3G
iPhone confirmed in Italy without revenue sharing?
The
3G iPhone
rumor has been afloat a lot recently. After all, we know it's coming as both
AT&T and Apple have confirmed. Now this: one of Italy's most respected
newspapers,
La
Repubblica (like the
WSJ
with red sauce), is claiming in no uncertain terms that the 3G iPhone is
coming shortly to Telecom Italia
without
a revenue sharing deal and
without
long-term exclusivity. If true, this change in strategy opens the doors for a
true, global, 3G iPhone launch on UMTS networks around the world come summer
time.

5 – Elektrobit
promises to deliver Windows Mobile-based satellite phone in 2009
Elektrobit is debuting satellite
phone device that's supposedly coming even soon. If the company is to be
believed, you'll be able to get your hands on the Windows Mobile-based device
pictured sometime in 2009, with it offering everything you'd expect from a
standard smartphone with the added benefit of always-on satellite access for
times when you stray beyond a cellular signal. That bit of convenience will come
from the
TerreStar
satellite network, which hasn't actually launched yet but,
last we heard,
was still on track for the end of this year. As for the phone itself, you can
apparently expect to get Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, along with HSDPA
support, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, a microSD card slot, a 3-megapixel camera,
and voice controls, among other standard smartphone features. No word on a price
just yet, but Elektrobit says it'll be "cost competitive" with standard
cellphones.

Western Digital launches world's fastest SATA disk: the 300GB VelociRaptor
Overclockers and gamers, prepare to meet your next hard drive: the 300GB
VelociRaptor from Western Digital. Said to be 35% faster than previous WD
Raptors,
the 10,000 RPM drive features a 3Gbps SATA interface, 16MB cache, and impressive
1.4 million hour MTBF thanks in part to the IcePack Mounting Frame. The IcePack
heat sink not only keeps the drive spinning extra cool, it also bumps the
2.5-inch HDD to a required 3.5-inch drive bay. Available exclusively on
Alienware's
ALX
gaming desktop this month and then up for grabs for everybody with $300 to burn
starting mid-May.
Here come the benchmarks. It's freaky fast -- even holds up well to SSDs at a
far better dollar-per-byte ratio according to
MaximumPC.

How can I run Spell Check in
my Internet Browser?
Internet Explorer
We recommend ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell
checks text input boxes on a webpage. It should come in particularly handy for
users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs,
diaries). Even if your web application already includes spell checking
functionality, you might still want to install this utility because it is
definitely much faster than a server-side solution. Plus you get to store
and use your personal word list across all your applications, instead of
maintaining separate ones on each application.
FireFox
In Firefox it’s built in to the latest version, it still has one issue, it
doesn’t automatically spell check fields by default. The normal behavior is to
only spell check multi-line text fields. If you want to have it always spell
check all text fields you need to follow these three simple steps.
That’s it. Now Firefox will spell check all input boxes automatically
Safari
Supports by default!

LED lightbulbs: Are you ready to make the switch?
But that might change soon, said Zach Gibler, chief business development officer
of Lighting Science Group, which plans to announce distribution deals with major
retailers for its LED bulbs that screw into a regular socket.
LED bulbs for household use have already been around for some time, but their
success has been limited. The main obstacles have been that they cost more than
incandescent lightbulbs and emit a sometimes unnerving color of light. Lighting
Science Group this week plans to introduce a portfolio of LED replacement white
lightbulbs that it hopes will attract more consumer interest. The product line
uses the same sockets as Edison bulbs.

2 - Samsung: Water-powered cell phones by 2010
Samsung has developed a new kind of cell phone battery that's powered by water
and is aiming to bring it to market by 2010.
Here's how it works: When the handset is switched on, reaction between metal and
water in the phone produce hydrogen gas. This is then channeled to the fuel
cell, where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power.
Samsung says the new battery could last for up to 10 hours. Based on four hours
of use daily on average, the hydrogen cartridge would have to be replaced about
every five days.
The next development would be to eliminate the hydrogen cartridge altogether and
to rely only on water. While all that sounds promising, we guess it'll be hard
to persuade people to adopt it en masse. After all, we've been trying to keep
our phones away from water.

3 – Toshiba sees 512GB solid state drive
by 2009
Toshiba is planning to ship 512GB Solid State drives by 2009, and expect these
storage devices to claim 1/4th of the market.
There currently preparing to ship 128GB SSD’s.
By 2010 SSD-based notebooks will be about 10% of the market then jumping
to 25% by 2011 analysts say. SSD Drives do cost a lot more (IE: 64GB is about
$1200 more than a 80GN hard disk drive). With
the price of NAND slated to drop 50% a year the price gap will shrink very fast.
Note: With SSD having no movable parts we prevent mechanical failures and
SSD’s are generally faster and in some respects more reliable.

4 - Volvo working on 'the uncrashable car'
This is a research project to invent the uncrashable car
This car may become reality someday. Instead of making cool gadgets to save
lives, the PReVENT project is more software than hardware. It uses existing
technology that, in event of a possible collusion, allows the car's intelligent
system to take over and execute evasive maneuvers.
Despite using currently available equipment, it will be some time before we see
this system implemented in the real world. For now you'll just have to keep
relying on airbags, seatbelts, and luck.

5 - 2009 Infiniti FX35 and FX50 to include
Distance Control Assist
Infiniti has a knack for keeping technophiles grinning, and just as it did with
the G35's
in-dash entertainment system,
it's bringing geeks even more automotive improvements to keep our minds off of
those skyrocketing gas prices. Reportedly, both the 2009 FX35 and FX50 will be
available with all-around cameras (you know, like those
found on the EX35),
Intelligent Cruise Control
and Distance Control Assist. The automaker seems particularly proud of that last
one, as it
claims
to be the first in the industry to offer up the tech. Put simply, DCA will
assist drivers in releasing the throttle and applying the brakes as needed in
stop-and-go / congested traffic, and (obviously) the system stays activated even
after the brakes are tapped. Check out the read link for a few more sneak peeks
at the forthcoming features.

AMD's Shanghai processor offers 12 cores and HyperTransport 3.0
If your interest in processor speeds doesn't extend much beyond "is it fast?"
then these juicy tidbits likely aren't for you. That said, this new AMD is
certainly getting power users excited about there upcoming
Barcelona successor: the
45nm
Shanghai. The main points of interest out of the gate are HyperTransport
3.0, which was nixed late in the game on Barcelona, and six cores, which are
meant to pit the chip up against Intel's upcoming six-core
Dunnington chip. Where
things get really exciting is a few months after Shanghai's late 2008 debut,
when AMD plans do release a twin-die version, with 12 cores of happiness
connected by HyperTransport 3.0. What does all that mean? Beats us, but we hope
it's fast.
HyperTransport
(HT), formerly known as Lightning Data Transport (LDT), is
a bidirectional serial/parallel high-bandwidth,
low-latency
point-to-point link that was introduced on
2001. The primary use for HyperTransport is to replace the
front-side bus, which is currently different for every type of
machine.
