Intel Corporation and Cray have today announced signing a multi-year agreement to advance high-performance computing (HPC) on Intel microprocessors while delivering broad new Intel and Cray technologies in future Cray server systems. The two companies plan to explore future supercomputer component designs such as multi-core processing and advanced interconnects. As a result of this collaboration, Cray and Intel plan to develop a range of HPC systems and technologies over the next several years.
Peter Ungaro, president and chief executive officer of Cray, said, “We’re excited at the potential of bringing together Intel’s powerful silicon expertise and Cray’s industry leadership in scalable HPC systems. This collaboration provides the HPC market segment with access to the best microprocessors the industry has to offer at any point in time, in the most advanced supercomputers in the world.”

Juggling spreadsheets, music, and reports between PCs may get a lot easier with a new Microsoft service called Live Mesh. The service, announced today, allows you to create a Web-based Live Desktop complete with Windows-like folders that can be shared with others and can be synched to multiple PCs, Microsoft says. Another key aspect of the service is software that runs on any PC linked to the Live Mesh service that allows for remote desktop access to Mesh-connected PCs.Microsoft’s future plans for Live Mesh include extending the service to Macs and cell phones. Microsoft Live Mesh is not currently available to the public. Microsoft is expected to officially unveil Live Mesh at the the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco on Thursday. However, starting tomorrow 10,000 developers will be invited to tinker with the serviceFrom http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/006845.html
Strength in its wireless operations helped propel AT&T to healthy earnings growth for the first quarter.
For the period that ended March 31, the telecommunications giant reported net income of $3.5 billion, or 57 cents per share, on revenue of $30.7 billion. Net income was up 22 percent from the year-ago quarter, while revenue rose 6 percent.
Income for AT&T’s wireless segment nearly doubled, leaping 95 percent from a year earlier to $2.9 billion. Revenue for the wireless business was $11.8 billion, up 18 percent. The company also reported gains in broadband and Internet Protocol-based services.
In its statement Tuesday morning, AT&T did not offer any updates on its sales of Apple’s iPhone, for which it is the exclusive carrier in the U.S. The company also declined to give hard data in its conference call with analysts. “The iPhone again continues to be very popular with customers, and customer feedback on the device is very good,” CFO Rick Lindner said, according to a Barron’s report. “Through the first quarter, it was pretty stable” in terms of sales, Lindner said.
The company’s wireline operations, by contrast, decline 2 percent in both earnings (to $2.8 billion) and revenue ($17.6 billion).
On Friday, a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission detailed AT&T’s plan to lay off about 1.5 percent of its workforce, with an ensuing pretax charge of $374 million for the first quarter.
At midday Tuesday, AT&T’s shares were up less than 1 percent to $37.91.
Asus Eee PC 900 launching 5/12 in the U.S. at $549 | Crave : The gadget blog
The upcoming 9-inch version of the popular Asus Eee PC has already been spotted in Europe and Asia, but details about an American launch were scarce — until now.
Sources at Asus tell us the Eee PC 900, which we discussed in detail earlier this week, will be available in the U.S. starting May 12, for $549. That’s a little more than the $500 figure everyone was assuming, and certainly more than the $399 7-inch version.
For the extra money, you do get more system RAM (1GB vs. 512MB), a higher 1,024×600 screen resolution, and more solid state hard drive space — 12GB in the Windows XP version and 20GB in the Linux version.
